Euthanasia

Many people who consider themselves pro-life and oppose abortion think differently about euthanasia. Why, they ask, should a person be forced to go on living if they can make the free and informed decision to end their lives painlessly?
Well, first of all, this argument forgets one of the most basic principles of morality: just because a decision is free and informed doesn’t necessarily make it a morally good decision.
But even more important is the fact that a culture in which euthanasia becomes more acceptable would actually decrease the possibility that the decision to end one’s life could ever be truly free. How would we ever really know if our 90 years old parents are ending their lives because they truly desire it or because they feel like a burden to us. Even if they’re not a burden, is it not possible that we may sometimes unconsciously make them feel that way?
The only way to honor our parents as God calls us to is to create a culture where euthanasia is simply unthinkable. This is the only truly pro-life position.
