Freedom

We are, to be sure, a freedom-loving people, and perhaps nothing is more important to us, not even our lives, as we can see from the great motto of the state of New Hampshire, “Live Free or Die.”
In and of itself, though, freedom is not enough. Once we have secured our freedom, the question must be asked: What is freedom for? What will I do with my freedom? How will I make myself worthy of this great gift my country gives me?
Freedom is not an end in itself. It is, we may say, open-ended, and we have seen it abused as often as we see it used well. As precious as our freedom is, let us not rest content with it. Let us use our freedom to become the kind of people that God intended us to become. If we do so, I suspect, we will make ourselves free in a whole new way, with a deeper and richer freedom that no government could ever hope to provide.
