Pope JP II on Sex & Marriage

The question is often asked: How can the Pope, a aged and celibate man, make statements about things like sex and marriage when he has no experience of either one? Interestingly, our late Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, addresses this very question in the preface of his immensely profound book, Love and Responsibility.
Granted, he admits he has no direct experience with marriage, though he has been around marriage for many years at the pastoral level. This is something which most other priests can claim, as well. In fact, one might even say that the average priest has much more experience with marriage than the average married person, since the priest is the one who sees the wide array of problems, solutions, strategies, and complexities that have surrounded the institution of marriage for thousands of years.
One more observation – Could it also be true that someone who is unmarried might understand some aspects of marriage precisely because he or she is unmarried? Sometimes when you are in the middle of something, it’s harder to understand when you are looking at it from the outside.
