There is a controversy raging in the United States today, and it involves the prospect that, in the not too distant future, federal courts may force the American people to accept the legitimacy of gay and lesbian marriage.
Of course, for a Catholic who actually adheres to Catholic doctrine, same-sex marriage is a contradiction in terms. Behind this is the idea that marriage itself is not something that human beings invented, or something over which human beings have dominion. Marriage is inherently between a man and a woman, a husband and a wife. Whereas gay and lesbian couples may be married in a legal order, therefore, they could never be married in the natural order, or in the Church.
To many, the public expression of this teaching is tantamount to a hate crime, but as Catholics we must never forget that nothing could be further from the truth. The Church does not oppose gay and lesbian marriage because she hates gays and lesbians, but rather because she loves them.If you love someone, you want them to be happy. And as the Church understands, no one can be happy without leading a truly good life and avoiding lifestyles that contradict the very essence of who we are.
