Some years ago, there was a lot of talking about this possibility that scientists had discovered the “gay gene,” that is, a genetic predisposition to homosexuality. I can still remember watching John McLaughlin proclaiming on his television program that such a discovery would prove that homosexuality is morally acceptable.
I still wonder why someone as intelligent as Mr. McLaughlin would have made such a glaring mistake. Why would a gay gene prove anything like that? The only premise under which an argument like that could be made would be that human behavior as a whole is determined by one’s genetic make-up. But if that were true, it wouldn’t just mitigate the question of homosexuality’s morality, it would mitigate morality altogether. For morality only makes sense if human beings are free, and that we can act in ways other than how we are moved by the physical constitution of our bodies.
Would McLaughlin have also argued that a homicidal or pedophilia gene completely absolves murderers and pedophiles?
