We often hear it said that the Roman Catholic Church, as well as conservatives across America, oppose the funding of stem cell research. This is plainly false. Stem cell research promises to treat a number of diseases and disabilities, and the Catholic Church in no way intends to stand in the way of this.

The problem is not stem cell research, as such, but the particular kind of stem cell research that results in the destruction of a human life – that is to say embryonic stem cell research. How ironic that those who plead for the White House to fund embryonic stem cell research that will “save lives,” are the same ones who fail to mention that whereas adult stem cell research has been used to successfully treat scores of ailments, embryonic stem cell research has never been found to treat anything.
