Bishop Frederick Campbell officially opened the Holy Door at Columbus St. Joseph
Cathedral on Sunday, Dec. 13. He joined Pope Francis and bishops at cathedrals worldwide this week in beginning the celebration of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The next 12 months in the Church will have a special emphasis on the works of
mercy. Pope Francis has granted a plenary indulgence to all who pass though the Holy Door of any cathedral or other designated site in the coming year. A plenary indulgence is the remission before God of the temporal punishment due for sins already forgiven. To gain the indulgence, a person must also make a sacramental Confession, receive Eucharistic Communion, pray for the Holy Father, and be absent from all attachment to sin, even venial sin.
