The short version of Mother Angelica’s life:

The Foundress of EWTN was born in Canton, Ohio, USA on April 20, 1923.   She was baptised as Rita Antoinette Rizzo.

Through the course of some miracles, Rita came to have a deep love for God and a huge devotion to Our Blessed Mother.  By 1944, Rita realized she was being called to a religious vocation.

taking vowsOn August 15, 1944, Rita entered the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration in Cleveland, Ohio as a postulant.  On November 8, 1945, Rita Rizzo  took her first vows  and her new name: Sister Mary Angelica of the Annunciation.  Soon after, Sr. Angelica moved to Sancta Clara Monastery in Canton, Ohio.   On January 2, 1953, Sr. Angelica made her solemn profession of vows.

How did EWTN get started?

In 1953, Sr. Angelica had a serious accident.   She promised God that, if she could walk again, she would build a monastery in the South.  In 1962, a new house for the order was established in Irondale, Alabama.  On the feast of the Assumption, August 15, 1981, Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) was launched.

in the radio roomIn 1996, the work began to build the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament & Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Hanceville, Alabama.   Work was completed in December 1999.  Mother Angelica suffered two strokes in 2001.
