The Rev. David J. Bonnar, became the 6th Bishop of Youngstown on Tuesday January 12th before a pandemic-limited congregation in a solemn ceremony in which family and Pittsburgh-area friends took prominent roles.
The ceremony was held at St. Columba Cathedral in downtown Youngstown.
He chose the motto for his new coat of arms “That All May Be One.”
“I never saw myself as a bishop,” he said. “I’ve always seen myself as a parish priest. The way I’m looking at this is that I’m just moving to a bigger parish with a larger staff. I just want to be the best pastor I can be for the people of Youngstown.”
The 58-year-old succeeds the late Bishop George V. Murry, who died on June 5.
