Advent – 2nd Sunday

Advent – week 2

As we enter the Second Week of Advent, our thoughts should be turning more and more to the coming of Christ at Christmas. As we move on to the second candle on our Advent wreaths, our sense of expectation increases, as does our recognition of the fact that we are not prepared, not only for the first coming of Christ that we will celebrate in a few weeks, but for His Second Coming at the end of time. As we light our Advent wreaths and engage in our Advent devotions (such as the Saint Andrew Christmas Novena and Advent Scripture readings), we refocus our minds and hearts on the Savior of the world.

Many churches also hold special musical events, such as Nine Lessons and Carols and singing of Handel’s Messiah oratorio. Also, the Advent Prose, an antiphonal plainsong, may be sung. The “Late Advent Weekdays”, 17–24 December, mark the singing of the Great Advent ‘O antiphons’.  These are the antiphons for the Magnificat at Vespers, or Evening Prayer (in the Roman Catholic and Lutheran churches). They form the basis for each verse of the popular Advent hymn, “O come, O come, Emmanuel.”

Week 2, Advent Prayer for Peace

Dear Jesus, you entered our world on Christmas as the Prince of Peace. This Advent, as we strive to become the-best-version-of-ourselves, fill us with a deep and abiding peace. Help us share that peace with everyone we encounter, especially those who need it most. Amen.
